Take Action Now: Protect Medicaid!

posted by Maghan Bowman on Wednesday, January 22, 2025

The state of America’s direct support workforce is in crisis, and it’s time for us to take a stand. The latest report highlights the persistent problems facing community providers due to ongoing recruitment and retention challenges. One of the most critical issues at hand is the potential reduction in federal Medicaid funding, which could have devastating effects on Home and Community-Based Services (HCBS) for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD).

Why This Matters
Cuts to Medicaid funding could fundamentally change the program’s structure, shifting costs to states and jeopardizing access to HCBS. This could lead to:

  • Longer waitlists for essential services.
  • Fewer available services for individuals in need.
  • Higher rates of institutionalization, placing immense strain on individuals, families, and providers.

We Need Your Help.

We urge you to contact your Senators and Representatives today and tell them to reject any proposals that reduce federal Medicaid funding. These proposals include per-capita caps, reducing the federal medical assistance percentage (FMAP) floor, and rescinding enhanced funding from the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA). While these ideas are still in the early stages, they pose serious risks to services for individuals with I/DD.

How You Can Help
Using the tool provided to us by our national affiliation, American Network of Community Options and Resources (ANCOR), you can easily contact your Senators and Representatives in less than five minutes.

Here's Why this Action Alert is Important.

  • Protect Vital Services: Ensuring continued funding for Medicaid means protecting the essential services that individuals with I/DD rely on for their daily lives.
  • Support Community Providers: Adequate funding helps community providers maintain the workforce needed to deliver high-quality care and support.
  • Advocate for Fairness: By voicing your concerns, you help ensure that individuals with I/DD receive the care and support they deserve, without facing unnecessary barriers.
