For many, a job is more than just a paycheck - it’s a chance to find purpose, build confidence, and achieve lifelong dreams. For David, that journey started with a leap of faith and two incredible opportunities.

One morning, David arrived at an interview for a janitor position at a local nature reserve. He was eager to find work, and his positive attitude shone through. By the end of the conversation, he was offered the job on the spot. It was an exciting moment, but something inside him told him to wait.

After thanking them for the opportunity, he asked, "May I have until tomorrow morning to make my decision?" The interviewer happily agreed.

While grateful for the offer, David knew his true passion was working with cars. Deep down, he hoped his interview later that day would go well - because if it did, that's where he wanted to be.

With newfound confidence, David eagerly walked into his second interview that afternoon. He had always loved cars, and working at a local auto service center felt like a dream. Once again, his passion and determination stood out, and by the end of the interview, he received another offer. He thanked his interviewer for his time and asked if he could give his answer the next morning.

Excited by the day's events, David shared the news with his Job Coach, Mike. "Wow, David! It was impressive enough to have two interviews in the same day, but to be offered two jobs is beyond amazing!" Mike said, beaming with pride.

Now faced with two great opportunities, David had a decision to make. With a little guidance and encouragement, he followed his heart and chose the position at the auto service center, which turned out to be one of the best decisions of his life.

When David called the nature reserve to thank them and decline the offer, they responded with kindness, "We are so happy for you! We were incredibly impressed by you and would like to share that you’ll always be welcome to have an opportunity with us."

Since starting in May of 2023, David has grown tremendously. What began with simple courtesy checks and car cleaning has evolved into a hands-on career as a lube technician. Every day, he gets to do what he loves - working on cars and learning more about the industry.

David's journey wouldn’t have been possible without the support of dedicated employment services. Thanks to Medicaid funding, individuals like David receive the coaching, resources, and encouragement they need to not only find a job but to build a future. In fact, 75% of adults in Iowa on Medicaid are working - just like David - and these supports make it possible for them to thrive in their chosen careers.

However, Medicaid funding is currently at risk, threatening essential services that support individuals with disabilities in finding and maintaining employment. Now more than ever, it's crucial to raise our voices and advocate for the preservation of these services. Click here to contact your members of Congress and advocate today.

Because when people are given the right support, they don’t just find a job - they find their purpose.
