Innovating for Independence

Over a year ago, we began gradually introducing tech-enabled services at EPI, recognizing that flexibility and innovation are essential to providing quality support.
As we've experienced firsthand, traditional approaches alone can no longer fully meet the needs of the individuals we support, our team members, or the broader provider system. That’s why we’ve adopted new tools designed to enhance independence, improve quality of life, and create a more sustainable future.
Now, with over 70% of homes utilizing these services, we’re celebrating our progress and sharing what we’ve learned. Join us as we explore how EPI’s innovative approach is reshaping support and fostering greater independence.
How Tech-Enabled Services Work
EPI’s tech-enabled services use cutting-edge smart home technology to provide support when it’s needed - while promoting independence. Each tech-enabled home is linked to EPI’s Virtual Connection Center (VCC), where highly trained local staff are on standby, ready to assist. These staff members know each individual personally and respond only when necessary, ensuring safety while respecting privacy. Here’s a closer look of how it works:
- Smart Sensors for Safety: Homes are equipped with sensors that detect important safety concerns, like a stove burner left on or a door left open. If triggered, VCC staff first attempt a virtual check-in before deploying in-person support if needed.
- On-Demand Support: Individuals can connect with VCC staff at the push of a button. For example, if Mark has a headache and needs medication, he can press a button that flashes green, instantly connecting him to staff who can assess the situation and deploy help if necessary.
- Customizable Privacy & Control: Depending on individual needs, homes can be equipped with a mix of sensors, a push-button speaker, and a camera with privacy settings to ensure support remains personalized and unobtrusive.
This innovative approach allows individuals to live more independently, with the peace of mind that help is always within reach when needed.
Addressing the DSP Workforce Crisis Through Innovation
One of the most significant benefits of tech-enabled services has been their impact on staffing challenges. Like many in our field, we’ve faced shortages, high turnover, and the need for competitive wages. Innovation is helping us overcome these obstacles:
- Reduced Vacancy Levels: Remote monitoring has eased the demand for overnight, in-person staffing, freeing up resources for the most critical hands-on support roles.
- Lower Turnover & Reduced Burnout: Technology has lightened the workload for our direct support professionals (DSPs), giving them tools to work more efficiently and effectively. Staff can focus more on meaningful, person-centered interactions - improving job satisfaction and reducing burnout rates.
- More Competitive Wages: As tech-enabled services create efficiencies and reduce strain on resources, we’ve been able to reallocate funds toward offering more competitive wages. This ensures that our dedicated team members are paid fairly for their essential work, making these roles more sustainable long-term.
Enhancing Greater Independence
Since 1957, EPI has championed independence for individuals with disabilities. Tech-enabled services are expanding opportunities for autonomy while ensuring support is always available when needed:
- Tailored Support for Individual Needs: Smart technology, from sensors to phone apps, help customize care based on each person’s unique needs. Instead of relying on fixed schedules, support is provided exactly when and how it’s needed, promoting greater independence.
- Immediate Access to Assistance, Anytime: With tools like remote monitoring, two-way communication devices, and emergency alert systems, individuals can quickly connect with support 24/7—ensuring help is always available without requiring in-person staff at all times.
Embracing the Future of Support
The future of disability services is here, and innovation is leading the way. At EPI, we are committed to using tech-enabled solutions to enhance independence, strengthen our workforce, and provide high-quality support for those who rely on us.
