"I enjoy volunteering with Rachael and I like telling our jokes," shared Preston as he laughed.
Rachael, also laughing, nodded and agreed, "I enjoy volunteering with you too, Preston! I feel lucky to watch you come out of your shell. I've noticed you have become more comfortable with introducing yourself. And when you're really comfortable, you ask if someone wants to hear a joke."
Later, we were all lucky enough to hear a few of his jokes. They were read by Preston from a notepad he carries with him - full of jokes he doesn't want to forget.
Being a Direct Support Professional (DSP) is so much more than your average career. It's a chance to build lifelong relationships, much like Preston and Rachael's.
DSPs are often the unsung heroes in the healthcare system. They provide personalized care, helping individuals with disabilities achieve their goals, participate in their communities, and live as independently as possible. Their work goes beyond physical support; DSPs also offer emotional support, companionship, and advocacy, ensuring that the people they serve are treated with dignity and respect.
The work of a DSP manages complex medical needs, assists with daily living activities, and navigates the emotional and social aspects of their support. Despite the demands of this career, DSPs approach their work with compassion, patience, and an unwavering commitment to improving the lives of others.
That's why EPI and provider's like us across the nation, come together every September to celebrate Direct Support Professional (DSP) Recognition Week.
What is DSP Recognition Week?
This year landing on September 8 - 14, DSP Recognition Week is time set aside to celebrate the heroes behind the title.
How You can Celebrate
During Direct Support Professional Recognition Week, there are many ways to show appreciation and recognize their invaluable contributions:
- Express Your Gratitude: A simple thank you can go a long way. Whether it’s a heartfelt note, a shout-out on social media, or a small token of appreciation, taking the time to acknowledge the hard work of DSPs can make a big difference.
- Recognition Events: Many organizations, like us here at EPI, host special events to honor their DSPs. Ours happens to be an award ceremony, motivational program, an appreciation lunch, and time together. These events provide an opportunity to publicly acknowledge the dedication and achievements of DSPs.
- Share Their Stories: Highlighting the stories and experiences of DSPs helps raise awareness of the critical role they play. Share testimonials, interviews, or profiles of DSPs in your community to showcase their impact. Follow along with our stories by searching for the hashtag #DSPRW2024.
- Advocate for Better Support: DSP Recognition Week is also a time to advocate for better wages for DSPs. Supporting policies and initiatives that improve working conditions for DSPs is a meaningful way to honor their work. Looking Forward
As we celebrate DSP Recognition Week this September, let’s take a moment to reflect on the vital role DSPs play in our society. Their work is not just a job; it’s a calling that requires immense dedication, empathy, and resilience.
By recognizing and supporting DSPs, we contribute to a more inclusive and compassionate society where everyone, regardless of ability, can thrive.
To all the DSPs out there - thank you for your hard work, your kindness, and your unwavering commitment to making the world a better place.
